Agenda Item Text:
Adopt Resolution 17-18 accepting a grant from the Gila River Indian Nation as a pass through for the Sunsites-Pearce Fire District in the amount of $11,000.
Background:
This is the first grant we’ve had from Gila River Nation – usually it’s only Tohono (since most tribes contribute to state and don’t distribute funds directly) The Tohono Nation has a grant contract form but this tribe needs a Resolution. They may have a grant contract as well that comes out. We do not act as a pass through to non-profits – only special taxing districts. We’ve done this in the past for Elfrida Water District.
------
WHERAS the Sunsites-Pearce Fire District is in receipt of a grant award from the Gila River Indian Community in the amount of $11,000
The Sunsites-Pearce Fire District, operating since 1973, is a special taxing district formed in Cochise County.
Funding for these grants is provided by a portion of Gila River Casino's annual revenues as a provision of Proposition 202 approved by Arizona voters in 2002, which created gaming compacts between the State of Arizona and Arizona Tribes. The intent of this funding is to support cities, towns and counties in providing government services that benefit the general public.
Many Indian Nations contribute their portion of funding directly to the state for distribution; the Gila River Indian Community chooses a direct disbursement to local governments.
These grants funded under Prop 202 contribute millions of dollars to various programs throughout the state.
Since 2003 the Gila River Indian Community has supported Arizona communities and residents through our annual revenue sharing program. We assist city, town and county governments and non-profit organizations to provide services in the areas of economic development, education, healthcare, public safety and transportation.
The district is in need of supplemental funding to purchase a set of specialty “Rescue Stabilization Tools” to assist in emergency extrications from motor vehicles.
The District participates in a mutual aid agreement and assists other agencies within Cochise County and the region.
The County will receive funds on the behalf of the District. The County will disperse the funds to the District upon receipt from GRIC. The District will procure the equipment and comply with all additional grant requirements.
