Agenda Item Text:

Approve Amendment to the Southeastern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy (SEALETA) IGA, between the Cochise County Sheriff's Office, Sierra Vista Police Department and Cochise County Community College, effective July 25, 2022 through May 26, 2023, and approved by the Board on June 21, 2022, providing for the addition of a Cochise County Sheriff's Office Recruit Training Officer (RTO) for operations of the Academy.

Background:

Cochise College, the Sierra Vista Police Department and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office have been operating the Southeastern Arizona Law Enforcement training Academy (SEALETA) since January 2019. This IGA will ensure we are able to continue to operate the academy for FY 22/23 with the intention of conducting two academy classes.

The number of recruits attending the Southeast Arizona Law Enforcement Academy may fluctuate greatly.  As the class size increases the current IGA doesn't provide the necessary flexibility to bring on additional recruit training officers (RTOs).  The addendum provides a mechanism to increase staffing to accommodate changing academy class sizes.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

If approved, SEALETA will have more flexibility to adequately staff their personnel based on class size.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

Properly staffing SEALETA will be more difficult which will result in poorer quality training and academy management.

To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:

Return one fully executed addendum to  Chief Thomas Alinen; Jill Adams, City of Sierra Vista; and email pdf to Jeff Mountjoy, Cochise College; scan and file remaining original.
