Agenda Item Text:
Adopt Resolution 11-05 to approve the appointment of Eliseo Rivera, Hector Rivera and Alfredo Romero Jr. to the governing board of the Sunnyside Fire District.
Background:
In 2000 the three member governing board of the Sunnyside Fire District all resigned at the same time. In October of 2000, the Board of Supervisors appointed Tom Schelling, head of the Elections/Special Districts Department as administrator of the fire district. Since then, during each election cycle, the fire district has actively sought candidates to run for the governing board, but there were no candidates that filed and Tom Schelling has been reappointed as the administrator every two years. With the upcoming retirement of Tom Schelling, three qualified electors living within the boundaries of the Sunnyside Fire District have agreed to be appointed to the governing board and serve until the next General Election in 2012. The three members are, Eliseo Rivera, Hector Rivera and Alfredo Romero Jr. If appointed by the Board of Supervisors, they will take their seats on the board at the meeting to be held on February 25, 2011.
Department's Next Steps (if approved):
Certificates of Appointment will be issued to Eliseo Rivera, Hector Rivera and Alfredo Romero Jr. and Oaths of Office will be administered.
Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:
Without the appointment of a governing board, the Sunnyside Fire District could face the possibility of the fire district being dissolved, impacting the safety and well being of the citizens living within the fire district.
