SUBJECT:

Resolution 21-R45 designating property located at 809 North 9th Street as a Fort Pierce Historic Property and a Locally Significant Site.

SUMMARY:

  • The property owner has submitted a Historic Designation Application for the property at 908 N 9th Street and is petitioning the Commission to grant designation as a Historic Property and a Locally Significant Site with the name of ‘St. Lucie County Welfare Home for Blacks’ based on the following designation criteria: Significant Event, Section 111-123(a)(1) of the City Code and Significant Person, Section 111-123(a)(2) of the City Code
  • The building at 809 North 9th Street highlights the historical era of segregation and Pre-Civil Rights Movement in the United States. It was used as the sight for the Saint Lucie County Welfare Home for Blacks, a segregated place where blacks who were poor and elderly could receive care.
  • A famous patient, world renowned author, anthropologist and play write Zora Neale Hurston, received care at the welfare home between 1958-1960 and passed away in the building on January 28, 1960.
  • On May 24, 2021, the Historic Preservation Board recommended this property for historic designation.
     


 

RECOMMENDATION:

Based on the archival documents provided by the applicant, staff identifies and recognizes the historic significance of the building and recommends approval of the historic designation of the property with the name of St. Lucie County Welfare Home for Blacks under the “Significant Event” and “Significant Person” designation.
