SUBJECT:

RESOLUTION NO. 8592 - A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HAWTHORNE, CALIFORNIA, PROCLAIMING MAY 3, 2026 THROUGH MAY 9, 2026 AS “MUNICIPAL CLERK’S WEEK” IN HAWTHORNE.

RECOMMENDED MOTION:

Staff Recommends that the City Council adopt Resolution No. 8592.

DISCUSSION:

Initiated in 1969, and sponsored by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (“IIMC”), Municipal Clerk’s Week recognizes the important role of Municipal Clerks in local government, and their contribution in servicing their communities and educating the public on the significance of their roles.

Municipal clerks perform some of the principal functions of the democratic process.  With the assistance of their deputies, they administer the local elections which can take months to organize.  They remind the city councils of certain restrictions on contemplated legislative actions.  They prepare agendas, take minutes, maintain ordinance and resolution files, keep the municipality’s historical records and record the action of the various commissions.

One of local government’s oldest positions is the Municipal Clerk.  Their duties have expanded over the years and, today, modern technology assists them with their increasing responsibilities.  To stay abreast of new computer applications, records management and other relevant information, many Municipal and Deputy Clerks return to the classroom to increase their knowledge of these issues, learn new material and sharpen old skills.

The City of Hawthorne in support of and in recognition of the efforts of the International Institute Municipal Clerks (IIMC) designates May 3, 2026 through May 9, 2026, as Municipal Clerk’s Week in the City of Hawthorne.
