Discussion and action for the adoption of a Resolution of the Hidalgo County Hazard Mitigation Action Plan, March 2016.

BACKGROUND

In response to the rising cost of responding and recovering from disasters, the President signed the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 on October 30, 2000. The Act encourages cooperation between state and local authorities, tribes, and the community to reduce the effects of disasters. Under the Disaster Mitigation Act, states and local governments must have an approved, adopted hazard mitigation plan in place to be eligible for disaster assistance Hidalgo County was awarded Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funding to develop a Multi-Hazard mitigation action plan. (Agenda Item# AI-37143) The Hidalgo County Hazard mitigation plan has been prepared in accordance with FEMA requirements 44 C.F.R 201.6 and has been approved by FEMA and the State pending Commissioners Court adoption. The plan is Operations and Maintenance: Update and Maintain the plan every 5 years. Each 5 years the action plan shall go through the FEMA and State approval process for recertification.
