Motion to apply for the MnDOT 2026 Transit Vehicle Replacement Grant.

Recommendation/Action(s):

Motion to proceed with the application for MnDOT’s 2026 Transit Vehicle Replacement Grant. 

Summary:

MnDOT announced the Transit Vehicle Replacement Grant will open on May 1, 2025.

MnDOT manages the transit vehicle replacement program statewide, and they are advancing the replacement of transit buses into 2026 to increase the State of Good Repair of transit vehicles and associated equipment.
  • Bus 832 is a 2019 Model with a 5-year service life.
  • Buses 864 and 865 are model years 2012 and 2013 respectively, with a 12-year service life.
  • Buses 851-853 are model year 2014 with a 12-year service life and are not yet programmed by MnDOT for replacement.

Central Garage will update and include the replacement buses in the Capital Improvement Projects for 2026.

Staff recommend applying for the grant and returning to Council with the agreement when received due to potential changes in project cost as a result of tariffs.
