ITEM:
Discussion and possible action on any and all matters regarding the Mayor and Council of the City of San Luis, Arizona approving a contract with Gadsden Elementary School District for its Marching Band's trip to London to perform in the 2025 New Year's Day Parade. (Olivia Jenkins, Operations Coordinator)
SUMMARY:
The Gadsden Elementary School District No. 32 was visited last November by representatives from London, England, to formally invite the Gadsden Elementary School District Marching Band to participate in London's New Year's Parade on January 1, 2025. The Marching Band consists of 100 students from 4th through 8th grade. Students with their parents are soliciting donations and support in their effort to raise funds to cover airfare, lodging, meals, and transportation for this trip. The students and a parent committee are working on several fundraising events to help with the trip-related costs.
During the Council Meeting held on February 28, 2024, Gadsden School District No. 32 parents and teachers made a presentation to solicit the city's support. The same as before, this invitation would allow the Marching Band to participate for a second time in London. In order for council to proceed, this matter is being presented for discussion and to provide direction to staff regarding the matter of the request made by the Marching Band.
The council's budget did not include this expense in FY 23-24 or FY 24-25 budget. In a previous contribution to the marching band for their trip to Rome, the city created a resolution for the purpose of supporting the Marching Band students who are residents of San Luis, Arizona. The city's contribution specified that it be divided equally among the said Marching Band students who are San Luis, Arizona residents. The purpose of supporting students with their costs for travel expenses is to provide students with the opportunity to be part of educational and historical tours that will allow them to engage and learn about London's history as well as learn from the experience of performing in a prestigious parade. The IGA is for $5,000.00.
