ITEM:
Discussion and possible action on any and all matters regarding a request by Grita, Canta, y Vota for an in-kind contribution to a civic engagement event. (Jenny Torres, Acting City Manager)
SUMMARY:
Grita, Canta, y Vota, a non-profit organization focused on engaging Latinos to participate in the democratic process. The organization approached the City of San Luis to propose a civic engagement event. Grita, Canta y Vota is a nonpartisan community campaign dedicated to registering and mobilizing the Latino community for long-term engagement through music. The organization believes that every eligible Latino voter should have the opportunity to make a difference in their community and our nation. Music plays an integral role in Latin culture; it is part of our cultural identity and a central part of our lives that brings people together. The organization wants to use it to empower Latinos to understand the power of their vote and participate in the democratic process.
The organization is holding several concerts throughout Arizona to engage the Latino community. The organization proposed having a concert on October 3rd from 5 pm to 11 pm. The proposal includes utilizing the soccer field, cultural center, and parking lots at Joe Orduno Park. The organization is raising funds to cover the cost of the event to include stage, entertainment, security, permitting, marketing, and other costs associated with the event. A request was submitted to the city for in-kind services to include expenses related to city personnel supporting the event. Our staff is evaluating the cost of these in-kind services, with an estimated amount not to exceed $5,000.00. The non-profit proposes to bring some music artists from Sonora, Mexico, and is interested in including local music groups. In addition, Unidos USA proposed to invite Claudio Suarez, the former Mexican soccer player. The proposal is to hold a meet and greet with Mr. Suarez a few hours before the concert, thereby providing an opportunity for young people to meet Mr. Suarez.
The AZ student association will facilitate the registration of new voters. The event is free for all registered voters, or you can register on-site and attend the concert. The non-profit estimates that approximately 5,000 participants will attend the concert. There will be no alcohol sale, and the group is proposing inviting food trucks to the event. Canta, Grita, y Vota is requesting that the City of San Luis support the event by allowing the concert to be held at our venue and providing in-kind services via police, fire, parks and public works personnel to cover traffic control and provide police and fire protection during the event.
