ITEM:

Discussion and possible action on any and all matters regarding the purchase of a new rescue truck from National Auto Fleet Group.  (Angel Ramirez, Fire Chief).

SUMMARY:

The purchase of a new rescue truck is necessary to improve the San Luis Fire Department’s operational efficiency, reduce unnecessary wear and tear on our frontline fire engines, and improve response times throughout the community. Currently, our fire engines are being utilized for a wide variety of emergency and non-emergency responses, including calls that could be handled more appropriately by a dedicated rescue unit. This additional workload contributes to increased mileage, mechanical wear, maintenance requirements, and downtime for our primary fire apparatus.

A dedicated rescue truck would allow us to assign the appropriate apparatus to each type of emergency, reducing the number of unnecessary responses by our larger fire engines. This would help extend the service life of our existing fleet and reduce long-term maintenance and repair costs. It would also allow our fire engines to remain available and ready for structure fires, vehicle extrications, hazardous incidents, and other emergencies where their specialized equipment and capabilities are essential.

The new rescue truck would also improve response times by providing a more efficient and appropriately equipped unit for medical and rescue-related calls. A smaller, dedicated rescue apparatus can respond more efficiently to these incidents while allowing our fire engines to remain strategically available for higher-priority emergencies. This improved deployment model would help ensure that the right resources are sent to the right call without unnecessarily tying up our frontline fire engines.

Investing in a new rescue truck is therefore an investment in both the department’s equipment and the safety of our community. It will help reduce wear and tear on our existing fire engines, improve fleet reliability, lower long-term maintenance demands, and provide faster and more efficient emergency response. Most importantly, it will help ensure that the San Luis Fire Department has the appropriate resources available to provide timely and effective service to our growing community.

A quote was requested from National Auto Fleet Group to ensure that the City receives the best available price. The vehicle will be purchased utilizing Sourcewell Contract 081325-NAF as allowed by our procurement code 03.05.090, Cooperative Purchasing. The Fire Department is seeking council approval for the purchase of a 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 in the amount of $66,346.61 for the reasons mentioned.
