Title

Adopt Resolution #20-184 Proclaiming October 2020 Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Purpose/Background:

Purpose:  To adopt a resolution showing the City of Ramsey's support in proclaiming Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Background:  A request was received from the Alexandra House to formally recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  A request for Domestic Violence Awareness was also received from the Purple Lights initiative.  Each year, throughout Anoka Country, October is officially recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Counties and cities all over the United States take this opportunity to honor this month through an official proclamation.  In choosing to locally proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the City of Ramsey shows its recognition of both the gravity of the problem and the importance of the ongoing work to create a violence-free community in Anoka County.  Council has adopted such resolution in the past, and staff is requesting Council do so for 2020 as well.  The proclamation will add to the chorus of voices insisting that women, men, and children all have a right to seek peace and safety in their lives.

The City will be lighting portions of the City Municipal Center with purple lights to help raise awareness of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Tina Bronson, Alexandra House’s Communications Marketing Director, will be attending the meeting on behalf of the Alexandra House organization to share a brief presentation about Domestic Violence Awareness Month and answer any questions.

Please Note:  per the Alexandra House website HopeFest has been canceled.

A copy of Ramsey's proclamation would have been displayed at the HopeFest Event, which was scheduled to be held on September 28th at the YMCA in Lino Lakes; however, this year's event has been canceled.  The event is attended by over 500 participants every year, challenges communities to confront the impact of domestic and sexual violence.  Additionally, it provides a space for survivors, family members, friends, and allies to honor those who have lost their lives as a result of domestic violence.  The City's proclamation will be displayed at the Alexandra House.
