Discussion and possible action to approve the submission of a FY2027 Project Safe Neighborhoods Program Grant Submission application to the Office of the Governor (OOG) in the amount up to $150,000 for the purchase of License Plate Recognition (LPR) camera equipment and related system components to support projects designed to support violent crime and firearms-related initiatives for the Webb County Sheriff’s Office and authorizing the County Judge to execute all relevant documents; including the resolution, and any other matters incident thereto. This grant requires no cash match. This grant will have no impact on the general fund. All required documents were submitted to the Economic Development Department and were found to be in compliance with the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) policy. 

Issue: Violent crime and firearms-related offenses continue to pose significant public safety challenges, requiring law enforcement agencies to utilize advanced technology to enhance crime prevention and investigative capabilities. The Webb County Sheriff’s Office must adapt to increasingly mobile and organized criminal activity, where timely identification of suspect vehicles is critical to solving crimes, preventing repeat offenses, and supporting officer safety. Limited access to modern surveillance and data-driven tools can hinder effective responses to violent crime incidents.

Solution: Approval of the FY2027 Project Safe Neighborhoods Program grant application will provide funding for the acquisition of License Plate Recognition (LPR) camera equipment and related system components for the Webb County Sheriff’s Office. The LPR technology will support violent crime and firearms-related initiatives by enhancing real-time vehicle identification, strengthening investigative efforts, and improving intelligence-sharing capabilities. This grant requires no cash match and will be implemented without impact to the County’s General Fund.

Result: Grant-funded LPR equipment will improve the Sheriff’s Office’s ability to deter, detect, and investigate violent crime and firearms-related offenses. The anticipated outcome includes faster identification of suspect vehicles, increased case clearance rates, improved coordination among law enforcement units, and enhanced public safety for the community. These improvements will be achieved through grant funding with no financial impact to the County’s General Fund.
