Reason for Recommended Action/Background
The Sheriff's Office is requesting to purchase a new sponson for its 22-foot patrol boat. A sponson is an inflatable polyurethane structure that surrounds the boat and acts like a bumper to prevent abrasions and damage to the hull. This is specifically important when tying off to other boats during an enforcement stop or compliance check, as it can protect against damage to other boats as well, reducing potential complaints from citizens. The standard expected service life of this equipment is 8 years, and the current sponson is approximately 13 years old and has begun to deteriorate, increasing the risk of malfunction and appearing unprofessional.
This equipment item will be purchased using budgeted FY 2023-24 funds. Because the item is a fixed asset, the Sheriff's Office is also requesting Board authority to amend the 2023-24 Authorized Equipment List.
