Reason for Recommended Action/Background
Last fall, the Public Defender and DA (and Probation) partnered to write a proposal asking the Community Corrections Partnership for funding to start a Mental Health Diversion Program with the goal of addressing the needs of an underserved population who live with mental illness and are involved in the criminal justice system. The program addresses the needs of individuals who have committed crimes based on their mental illness (including substance use disorders). This program expands the population served by our Specialty Courts (Mental Health and Addiction Intervention Courts) by addressing the needs of individuals who have committed less serious crimes driven by a much larger array of mental illness diagnoses. We are entering into an agreement with CommuniCare as they will be providing the treatment for this program.
Funding for the Mental Health Diversion Program was approved at the County's adopted budget meeting in September 2021. Funding for the agreement with CommuniCare was included in this budget.
