Strategic Plan Goal(s)

Thriving Residents

Reason for Recommended Action/Background

The CDPH WIC Division administers funds provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service for the operation of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for county WIC programs. Service population eligibility for WIC is based upon federal regulations such as participant category (pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infant or child under five years of age), a household income at or below 185 percent of federal poverty guidelines, and nutritional risk. The overall goal of WIC is to improve the health status of eligible participants by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and other social services.

Yolo County WIC has supported community resilience and health for generations.  Access to WIC has been an essential part of ensuring healthy pregnancies, better birth outcomes, and supporting children to grow and thrive. WIC has helped increase access to nutritious foods and supported families with breastfeeding. These are known strategies for reducing chronic disease and the associated health costs. The program connects families to critical resources in the county. WIC is an important service that many Yolo County families rely on.

The Yolo County Board of Supervisors has previously approved HHSA to accept funding for WIC, with the most recent application being approved April 12, 2022 for the period of October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2025 in the amount of $4,204,654, with three subsequent amendments that have increased the total amount of funding for the term of the agreement to $4,357,213.

To ensure the continuation of WIC services to Yolo County families, staff hereby recommends that the Board approves HHSA’s request to submit an application to CDPH to renew funding for WIC.
