Reason for Recommended Action/Background

The Yolo County Board of Supervisors has designated Yolo County Resource Conservation District (YCRCD) as the County Coordinator. The County Coordinator collaborates with the Yolo County Fire Safe Council's (YCFSC) 20 voting members, local fire departments and fire protection districts, local nonprofit organizations, community Fire Safe Councils, and the Yolo County Board of Supervisors.

This program allows the YCRCD to continue to coordinate the YCFSC, update/manage the YCFSC website, add educational activities, and expand outreach to Spanish-speakers and two newly designated high-risk communities. The County Coordinator will continue working with County OES, CAL FIRE, local fire protection districts (FPDs), and other YCFSC members to coordinate education, home hardening and D-space, and fuels reduction projects. Other partners include PG&E, Caltrans, Catholic Charities of Yolo and Solano, and Solano RCD.  Through the YCFSC, the County Coordinator will continue collaboration on CWPP Projects and secure the resources and partnerships needed for successful implementation.

The YCFSC reaches its audience through social media, email, newsletters, a website, and mailers. With continued funding, YCFSC could expand to include radio ads, short videos, and focus on physical mailers featuring program information to reach less tech-savvy residents. We will also host at least one county level training on the CWPP toolkit and conduct a “Fire Resilience 101” training to introduce prescribed grazing and fire, home hardening, defensible space, and available resources to provide an overview to rural landowners about available fire resilience opportunities and how to access them.

This project also funds grant development to support fuels work and local FPDs, and environmental compliance for YCFSC capacity building and fuel reduction projects needed to make communities in the high fire zones more resilient.

Collaborations (including Board advisory groups and external partner agencies)

Yolo County Office of Emergency Services, local fire protection districts, and other Yolo County Fire Safe Council members to coordinate a wide variety of projects, PG&E, Caltrans, RISE Inc., DeColores, Catholic Charities of Yolo and Solano County, and Solano RCD
